How Makeup Has Changed the Way I See Myself… Without Makeup.

For the first 24-ish years of my life, I prided myself on being low maintenance and not wearing much makeup. Sure, I’d wear it for special occasions. But I wasn’t like other girls. I didn’t wake up before school to put on a face of makeup. I was easy and breezy all on my own. I didn’t need Covergirl.

But after I graduated college, that all changed.

Maybe it’s because I had a job and actually had money to spend. But I started buying makeup. It started with drugstore stuff, but soon I’d graduated on to a few pricier products from Sephora, and became a frequent buyer from Colourpop.

I don’t pretend to be amazing at makeup or anything like that. I’m definitely not a makeup artist, nor am I necessarily even good at applying makeup.

But it makes me happy.

I love trying bold and new lipstick colors. I get excited when I open an eyeshadow palette and look at all the colors and possibilities.

It has become a creative expression for me.

Wearing makeup is like carrying around a painting you created. Sometimes, you’re a little less enthused. But other times, you’re really proud of your work.

It’s also a way to connect to others. It always makes me laugh that people say women do makeup for men. Never once has a man ever commented on my inner eye highlight, but I’ll never forget when a woman at work once complimented mine.

Makeup has made me appreciate my face without makeup. I know that sounds silly, but when I take off my makeup at the end of the day, I appreciate my face. I love taking care of it without makeup and doing my morning and nightly skin care routines.

Doing my makeup has become one of my favorite hobbies. It brings me so much joy, and makes my days better. Maybe makeup isn’t your thing, and that’s okay. But I hope that you find something that serves you the way that makeup serves me.
